Before the construction of the new Denise Kable Youth Services Centre (DKYSC), the Darling Downs South West (DDSW) region operated the 'Denise Kable Centre'.

Prior to 2009, the Denise Kable Centre (DKC) was located within a residential building on South Street, Toowoomba and delivered services to promote the social and emotional development and engagement of young people in the Toowoomba area.

In 2009, the DKC was relocated to facilities within the grounds of Centenary Heights State High School and the DDSW region's Student Services Unit was responsible for the oversight of the DKC programs, incorporating a Positive Learning Centre (PLC), Toowoomba Alternate Learning and Education Site (TALES), for young people returning to the community from detention and support for the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program for the DDSW region.

Following enrolment growth and pressures on facilities at Centenary Heights State High School, discussion and consultation with DDSW region principals was undertaken regarding support service delivery models and processes which identified an opportunity to realign the DKC model with system priorities and to better meet the evolving needs of the target cohort of at-risk young people requiring support services.
